Southbourne Community Choir...a fun, friendly and informal choir for the community!

I was delighted to be asked to take over Southbourne Community Choir as Musical Director almost two years ago...the choir is based and run by Immanuel Church in Southbourne, as a non audition community choir open to all. Ruth, minister Peter, Emily, Alison and their team run the choir leaving me to concentrate on the music!

We rehearse in the hall behind the church every Tuesday in term time from 7.30 - 9pm.There are over 60 members of the choir on the books but the average attendance is around 35...we are suffering from a lack of gentlemen at the moment though, so if you are male and fancy a sing you'll be very welcome. We sing an eclectic mix of songs, and I try to find songs that are not being sung by any other local choirs....we love swing, and we also sing pop, rock, country and classical. At the moment we are learning several new songs: Dont Stop Believing by Journey,Going to the Chapel by the Dixie Cups, It Don't mean a Thing if it ain't got that Swing...and I Will Follow from the Musical Sister Act! So lots to keep us busy.

We have quite a unique idea in our choirs in that we don't expect you to just sing in one section...if you fancy having a go at a different part you are welcome to move to a different section and try it out! Doing a little vocal improvement is important so we start every session off with a warm up and some fun vocal and physical exercises...we have members who have some physical disabilities so they take part in whatever they can.

Talking of performances we perform a few times a year at local art and music festivals, we sing quite a lot at Christmas both inside and outside around Southbourne, and we are available for W.I meetings, Care homes, Friendship club meetings,in fact any social occasion, and we also have an interactive element to our performances! We will be singing again at Mudeford Festival this year and are hoping to sing at the Shake and Stir Festival in Southbourne too.We are always happy to have people come and try us out...just turn up and you will be welcomed with open arms...you don't have to audition.. :;-)
